“Journey Trilogy” by Aaron Becker. Published by Walker Books. A fabulous wordless trilogy of gorgeously illustrated wordless books which let our imagination take us on a journey of a lifetime.
The first book in the trilogy is “Journey”. It starts off with a little girl getting bored. Everyone at her home is busy with their work and she is left alone. She doesn’t know what to do. And an impromptu drawing of a door that she makes with her red crayon on the wall of her bedroom turns into a magical one opening into a fantasy world full of magic and adventure. However it isn’t just fun always. She has to face dangers during her special journey. An evil tyrant is trying to catch her and a beautiful purple bird. Will she be able to find her way back home? Will she be able to save the bird? Find out in this fantastic book.
The second book of the trilogy is “Quest”. The magical journey through the fantasy world continues in this book. However there are two young children this time. The girl has met a boy and they are on a quest this time to rescue a king who has been captured by some evil people. Where will they have to go this time? Can they find the king? Will they be able to rescue him? Find out in this visually enchanting book.
The third book of the trilogy is “Return”. This is the final leg of the journey through the fantasy world. The girl who finds herself lonely once again decides to revisit the magical world. She is looking for friendship and new adventures this time in the world of kings and emperors. And her father is on a quest to find her once he realises that she isn’t at home and sees the magical door on her bedroom wall. Can he find her? Will they return back home? Find out in this irresistibly stunning book.
My 8.5 year old and I have enjoyed this gorgeous set of books for close to three years now. I got him the first book as a gift for his sixth birthday just before the pandemic. And we had to wait through the initial lockdowns to get the next two books as books were not being delivered home then. These books were a means for us to escape into a secret world that was full of enchantment, magic and beauty right from the confines of our home. The stunning and elaborate illustrations were a feast for the senses. And we could spin our own story given that these are wordless books. Each time we opened the books, we found new details which we had missed in the previous readings. The books gave wings to our imagination and we felt that we were part of the journey ourselves. The first book was selected as a Caldecott Honor Book in 2014.
I feel that this trilogy is ageless and an absolute MUST on everyone’s shelf. For those of you who have enjoyed reading the classic book called “Harold and the Purple Crayon”, this trilogy will be a bonus treat. We felt that these books may have been inspired from that book.
This is the 365th book that I have reviewed here on the House Full of Books (HFOB) newsletter. A memorable milestone for HFOB! And I couldn’t think of a better book than “Journey” for this milestone. It has been an enjoyable journey for us! Thank you all for being a beautiful part of this amazing journey 🙏🏼. All the previous reviews are available on the website. For anyone who want to go through book reviews, there is one that you can read everyday for one full year :)
Recommended Age
