#379 - The Incredible Life of Jhalkari Bai
by Swati Sengupta and illustrated by Devashish Verma
“The Incredible Life of Jhalkari Bai : The Braveheart Warrior” by Swati Sengupta and illustrated by Devashish Verma. Published by Talking Cub, the children’s imprint of Speaking Tiger. A short illustrated biography of Jhalkari Bai who played a pivotal role as an important member of Rani Laxmibai’s army in 1857.
The book begins with Jhalkari as a twelve year old in the forest gathering wood. Jhalri, as she was fondly called, was on her way back to her village of Bhojla near Jhansi. She ended up having a sudden unexpected encounter with a tiger which decided to attack her. She fought bravely to protect herself and ended up killing the tiger with her bare hands! She became the bravest girl of her village by fighting off dacoits on her own. She dreamt of becoming a soldier when she grew up. In this she was completely supported by her father who had immense faith in her strength and courage.
Jhalri grew up to be one of the bravest women that our country has ever known. Her marriage to Puran Kori who was a soldier in the army of Jhansi took her to the city. With his support and encouragement, she went on to join and lead the women’s regiment of Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi’s army called the “Durga Dal”. She knew no fear and was ready to sacrifice her life for her country. Read the gripping story of this incredible woman who has ended up as just a footnote in history though she lives on in the hearts of her people in Jhansi, Bhojla and around.
My 8.5 year old son and I loved reading the story of this memorable warrior. We were amazed by her strength, courage, determination and perseverance. Her bravery and sacrifice are one of a kind. So glad to see a book on people like her who have ended up becoming lost in the pages of history books or missed out as well. It is time we get to know of them and honour their contributions. The book is part of a new series of short and illustrated biographies of Indian icons for younger readers by Talking Cub. The series aims to introduce readers to a diverse group of Indian achievers, both well-known and those who should be. Another book that we’ve read and loved in this series is “The Incredible Life of Milkha Singh”.
