“Ramayana For Kids” by Rita Gandhi and illustrated by Nayan Soni. Published by Rishi Muni Prakashan. A delightful retelling of the Ramayana for the youngest of readers.
The Ramayana needs no introduction to most people. The timeless epic is an integral part of Indian literature. Festivals such as the Dussehra and Diwali are celebrated in honour of Rama’s victory in the battle with Ravana and subsequent return to Ayodhya. While there are many versions of the epic available for an older audience, I have tried to find ones suitable for younger children who have just started reading by themselves or those who have just started listening to slightly longer stories than just one or two lines of text per page. This book is a good fit for that purpose with just the right amount of information for the age group between 4-6 years to know the epic.
I read this book with my almost nine year old and we enjoyed reading it. It was a refreshing read for him given that he knew the story already after having read another older version in hardbound format with old world illustrations two years ago. The book tells the main story line in crisp and easy language so that the early readers don’t get intimidated by the amount of text and lose attention. The illustrations are bright and in graphic animation format making it quite relatable to them. One of the things we liked the most was the map at the end of the book which shows the important places mentioned in the story. This gives a lovely touch to the reading experience as the children can trace the path of Rama, Sita and Lakshmana’s journey. The fact that the book is a paperback is a bonus making it quite light in weight and easy to carry during travel.
