by Anita Satyajit and illustrated by Manoj Vijayan
“Isapuram Tales : The Chameleon Effect and Other Stories” by Anita Satyajit and illustrated by Manoj Vijayan. Published by Anita Satyajit. A delightful collection of five stories featuring a 10 year old girl bubbling with curiosity and a wise old spiritual man from the fictional town of Isapuram.
Diya is funny, talkative and a bundle of infectious energy. She is always coming up with questions and up to some mischief or the other most of the times. Her go to person to clear her doubts and get answers to her questions is Baba who is her next door neighbour. He is the most respected man in their town. Everyone likes him and looks up to him. Even animals trust him. His calmness, patience and the talent to explain difficult and complicated things using simple analogies help Diya understand and lay her doubts to rest.
There are five stories in this book which is the first of the “Isapuram Tales” series. The stories talk about facing fears and nervousness, controlling our thoughts, showing kindness, being mindful of our habits, praying and God. All of this without being too preachy and with extremely relatable analogies. Each of the stories are set around the daily lives of Diya, her parents, friends (Ayesha and Biju) and Baba. Diya and Baba share a beautiful bond of friendship and trust. Could it be that Baba has magical powers that he shares with Diya? Or are they just regular folks who have figured out how to live a life full of magic and happiness? Read the charming book to know what Diya and Baba talk about and how their lives are filled with peace and joy.
My almost nine year old loved reading the book with me. He loved the characters of Diya and Baba and couldn’t put the book down. He is eager to read the second book of the series soon. Diya’s vivid imagination and Baba’s witty answers to her mischievous questions were the highlight of the stories for us. Their friendship is the heart and soul of the book. Their charm is sure to rub off on anyone who reads the book. There is wit, humour and fun in the stories making it an engaging and relatable read. And the book leaves one with a refreshed mind full of joy and happiness. The fact that simple pleasures of everyday life can make one feel at peace and happy is what comes through the stories.
