“Sleepytime Tales With Coco Comma” by Sonia Mehta and illustrated by Sunayana Nair. Published by Penguin. A delightful collection of four stories featuring an English ace who cannot tolerate incorrect usage of the language.
Coco Comma is the resident English expert of her town. She loves to read books. More often than not, she is found with her nose buried in one. This habit of hers makes her bang into doors or bump into people many a times to their annoyance. To make things more irritating for the townspeople, she likes to correct them whenever they do not speak in correct English. She doesn’t care even when her best friend Sunny keeps reminding her that it’s rude as well as annoying to interrupt and correct others most of the times.
The book has four stories set around Coco and her adventures with words. The themes are creating sentences having rhyming words, making sentences with alliterations and using hilarious idioms. Apart from these, Coco finds her perfect match in a strange and magical alphabet tree which can talk in impeccable English and is as good as her. Finally she has some suitable company! Read the highly entertaining and delightful stories of Coco’s adventures with books and English as she goes around town having fun.
My nine year old son and I enjoyed reading the book. He was keen to see what Coco had in store for him and was pleased to know about alliterations which was something new for him. Recently he had figured out what is meant by Idioms and he was happy to add new ones to his list. Coco’s antics and the other characters were full of entertainment and a source of joy and delight. My five year old nephew who loves rhyming words thoroughly relished the story on that and made me read it out to him a couple of times. He is now on a spree to say “superdupertroopergooper” as fast as he can after he came across the word in the book :) Alliterations were also something that he relished and we kept making our own groups of words. The book is a part of the “Sleepytime Tales” series which has four stories in each book having a central theme which the children can get to know through fun and entertaining stories. The stories are well suited for bedtime reads.
