“Bhagavad Gita For Kids” by Rita Gandhi and illustrated by Shweta Singh Baidya. Published by Rita Gandhi. A summarised and simplified version of the Bhagavad Gita for younger readers to help them understand and appreciate the learnings from it.
Most of us are familiar with the great Indian epic of Mahabharata. The great battle of Kurukshetra took place nearly 5000 years ago. The Pandavas and Kauravas fought with each other for the throne of Hastinapur. Arjuna was shying away from the battle as it was about to begin. He was in a dilemma as the opposition had so many people that he loved and respected. How could he fight against his teachers, relatives and loved ones? He was thinking of giving up his rights to the kingdom and living in peace in the forest instead of a terrible battle. Of what use was victory going to be if his loved ones perished in the process? He then sought Lord Krishna’s guidance in this matter.
Krishna imparts a sermon about righteousness, path of duty, karma, meditation and so on. This has come to be known as the Bhagavad Gita. The teachings of the Gita are as relevant and important in current times as they were at that point of time. The wisdom and learnings from this timeless epic are not to be missed by anyone. Read the book to introduce this epic in a simple and engaging manner to younger children.
My nine year old son and I enjoyed reading this book. He already knew some of the stories that Krishna tells Arjuna while explaining. But the way in which Krishna quotes them to explain his teachings was something new for him. He had always wanted to read the Bhagavad Gita and I had asked him to wait till he grew up a bit. This book came at the right time to us and helped pique his curiosity to know what the Gita is all about. The amount of information was just about right to hold his attention. The language was quite simple and I didn’t have to explain too much as he already knew some of the things like I mentioned before. The bright and cheery illustrations complement the narrative and are helpful in retaining the attention of children.
