“The Christmas Tree Mystery” by Bharti Singh and illustrated by Urvashi Dubey. Published by Daffodil Lane. A charming little mystery of a Christmas tree that grows shorter with every passing year.
The story is narrated by a little boy who is eager to solve a mystery at his home. He just can’t seem to find an answer to why his Christmas tree is behaving strangely. It seems to be changing in size as the years are passing by. Not taller but shorter! The tree is not a real one but made of plastic which is what makes the whole thing so intriguing for him.
The boy remembers very clearly that the tree used to be much taller. He is sure of it as he used to place the star atop the tree and his arms wouldn’t reach the top. He has so many pleasant memories associated with the tree. Now he is clueless as to what is happening to the tree. What could be the reason for the tree to shrink? Is there some magic or illusion at play? Can some sorcery be the secret behind this? Can the curious little boy find out? Read the book to try and help the little detective solve this delightful mystery :)
The story was a charming one for me and my 9.5 year old. Picture books have become occasional reads for us these days and we treasure them whenever we get an opportunity. Of course the topic has to be interesting for the boy to get hooked. And what could be better than a mystery to be solved. The way in which the boy goes about analysing the mystery in a methodical way was so endearing. The story gave a lovely glimpse into the Christmas celebrations through the boy and his family. Their family bonding has been deftly woven into the narrative. We found the plot charming and it will definitely be relatable for all the little ones and the not so little ones as well :) The accompanying illustrations are fabulous and bring the story to life.
