“The Life of a Tiger” by S.Eardley-Wilmot. Published by Talking Cub, the children’s imprint of Speaking Tiger. A captivating account about the life of a tiger in the jungles of Northern India.
The majestic tiger prowls the enchanting forests as a fearsome predator and an untamed beauty. The tale of one such tiger comes alive in this book written by a forestry officer and conservationist from the times of the British rule in India in the early half of the twentieth century. The story starts when the tiger is a mere cub and traces his life right from the time he is learning to hunt to facing several challenges due to the rapidly changing environment around him.
The tiger gets into many a scrape during his lifetime. While he is a formidable predator himself, he also faces several challenges in order to survive. Human encroachment, forest fires, lack of prey, natural predators from the other tribes of the jungle like wild dogs and the presence of human hunters make him extremely resilient and instinctively wary. Read the engrossing book that not only entertains but makes us reflect on the fragile nature of the relationship between humanity and nature.
My almost eleven year old son and I had a great time reading this vivid portrayal of a tiger’s life. It was heartening to read about how the tiger adapts to changes around him each time when he was faced with tough situations. The wild spirit of the tiger has come out beautifully in the book. The narrative showcases not just the tiger but the beauty of an Indian forest in its finest grandeur. Despite the language being a bit dated, it still has a charm which we found quite irresistible. This did however make us read the book a bit slowly and savour the narrative. Right from the habits of the tiger to the habitats that it is found in and the other denizens of the jungle, we found the story quite informative giving us a beautiful glimpse into the forests of the plains as well as the Himalayas. The varied and beautiful landscapes and the scenes have been described so well that we felt like we were watching the life of the tiger unfold in front of our eyes. The book is a treat for those who love nature and wildlife. We now look forward to reading another book by the author on the life of the elephant which is another majestic animal.
Recommended Age
The book is apt for children aged 12 and above for self reading. However, it can be read aloud to a slightly younger child like we did.
