“A Kite called Korika” by Sharada Kolluru and illustrated by K.P.Muraleedharan. Published by Tulika. A quaint story of nine year old Yellaiah who lives in the village of Pamidi in Andhra Pradesh. His parents are farmers working in a paddy field. He has a seven year old brother called Mallaiah who wants all his things. They live in a hut with an old cow named Lakshmi.
Yellaiah describes the landscape of his village and the things around him using sounds. He likes sitting under a giant peepal tree with an old woman called Rajamma who sells fruits. Everyone has been awaiting the rains but the monsoon hasn’t arrived yet. For the next few months they remained hungry quite a bit.
One day Yellaiah was sitting with Rajamma and looking up at the sky wishing for some rain. Suddenly he spotted a black dot in the sky which turned out to be a beautiful kite! Rajamma said that it was a wish fulfilling kite. Yellaiah cannot wait to show it to his friends. Soon he has lists of wishes from his friends.
What does he do next? Does he write all their wishes on the kite and send it back to the sky? Is he ready to part with the kite? This is a lovely story of children’s dreams and fears as well as their hope. Hope is necessary in bleak situations. The rural landscape, the innocence and simple desires of the village children have been portrayed so well. Loved reading this book with my seven year old. Thank you Vidya Mani of Funky Rainbow for yet another wonderful recommendation!
