“A Tangle of Brungles” by Shobha Vishwanath and illustrated by Culpeo S.Fox. Published by Karadi Tales. A spooky story from the mystical world of witches and magic with a dash of collective nouns thrown in for fun.
The story starts off with a coven of witches hatching a plan on a full moon night. They live on a hill with their clowder of cats. The witch with a wart wants to marry Brungle who is the king of her heart. He is very vile and has a grotesque style which she loves very much. To bring him there, they need to brew a broth. Off they go to find the black book for making “The Great Brungle Stew”.
The witches begin making the terrible broth. Lot of spectators such as a parliament of owls, a wake of buzzards and a murder of crows start arriving to witness the much awaited arrival of Brungle. All kinds of creatures and things are tossed in the broth and it is bubbling. They start singing the magical song. What happens next? Does Brungles arrive? Will their potion work? Have they missed out anything? Will Brungles marry the witches? Does he have a choice? Do read the book to find out.
I had a rollicking time reading this with my seven year old. We just couldn’t wait to turn the page and see what would happen next. The illustrations are just amazing and we loved the expressions of the witches. A perfect read for some fun time especially during Halloween. The book is apt for children aged 7+.
