“Appaka” by Sreelatha Radhakrishnan and illustrated by K.P.Muraleedharan. Published by Tulika. An endearing story of a little girl Nonnu and her goat Appaka. Set in Kerala, the story showcases everyday life of Nonnu.
Nonnu’s world revolves around Appaka who is three months old. He landed in their courtyard one day and was so weak that they decided to take care of him till someone came looking for him. But no one did. So they ended up keeping him. Appaka ends up becoming her best friend. Nonnu’s father died when she was a baby and her mother works in the fields. Her uncle Pappu mama is very kind to them. It is he who sent Nonnu to a better school.
One day Nonnu comes home from school to find Appaka missing! Oh no... She looks frantically for Appaka everywhere and asks everyone if they have seen him. But no one had. She went to the goddess of the grove, Bhagavathi and prayed. She promised to break three coconuts and light a lamp if Appaka was found.
What has happened to him? Did he get lost? Did a fox get him? Had a thief stolen him? Is he hurt? Is he feeling lonely without her? Did he have enough to eat? All these scary thoughts cross Nonnu’s mind. Poor Nonnu is not able to sleep or eat or smile any longer. Will she see Appaka again? What is she to so without her best friend? Does she give up hope?
The affectionate bond between Nonnu and Appaka has been portrayed very nicely. The illustrations bring the story and the landscape to life. I enjoyed reading this book with my seven year old. It was endearing to read Nonnu’s thoughts about Appaka’s future. Apt for children aged 4+. Thank you Vidya Mani of Funky Rainbow for recommending this lovely book!
