“Big Rain” by Gayathri Bashi and illustrated by T.R.Rajesh. Published by Tulika. A book written to explain how the floods in Kerala were devastating and affected so many families.
Rain can be fun for most of us. But it can cause havoc and destruction too if it is in excess. Lots and lots of rain can be scary. Water can gush into homes and wash away everything. Natural calamities such as floods can be devastating. This book is a good way to explain all of this in a simple yet striking manner. The illustrations lend life to the narrative brilliantly.
Children will realise the fact that we need to take care of nature so that it takes care of us in return. The book was written by the author in an attempt to explain to her child about the floods in Kerala a few years ago. The intent is not to show it as a grim or bleak situation but with a ray of hope as to how the people overcame the difficulties and what we can learn from this kind of situations.
Overall this is a simple but powerful book and a must read. My seven year old loved the book. Thank you for recommending this lovely book Vidya Mani of Funky Rainbow! The book is apt for children aged 5+.
