World Bamboo Day (September 18) special. “Bulbuli’s Bamboo”by Mita Bordoloi and illustrated by Proiti Roy. Published by Tulika. A delightful book to showcase the importance and versatility of bamboo.
The story revolves around a little girl called Bulbuli who lives in Assam. She goes around showing how there is bamboo around her everywhere. Bamboo is used abundantly in her food, furniture, house and outside too.
The extensive usage of bamboo in the region has been described very well by the author who herself grew up in Assam near Kaziranga National Park by the banks of the Brahmaputra river. The importance of bamboo and the role that it plays in sustainable living has been explained in simple words for the little ones in a delightful repetitive manner. The illustrations are so dreamy and add to the charm of the story. Apt for 5+ year olds. The last page has a fact sheet on bamboo.
