Captain Coconut & The Case of the Missing Bananas
by Anushka Ravishankar and illustrated by Priya Sundram
“Captain Coconut & The Case of the Missing Bananas” by Anushka Ravishankar and illustrated by Priya Sundram. Published by Tara Books. A humorous number mystery featuring the ace detective Captain Coconut whose great brain can solve any mystery be it large or small.
This is the first book in the Captain Coconut series. This is a chapter book and is in the graphic novel format. Captain is extremely funny and up to all kinds of stunts. He thinks he is extremely smart and famous. What he doesn’t know is that he ain’t that smart and his ways are hilarious. He has been called upon a case of missing bananas. There is a trail of slippery banana peels and numbers.
The children are going to enjoy going through the clues and calculating the number of bananas at different points of time through the story. And captain’s antics of course will keep them rollicking with laughter. There are a couple of catchy songs about the captain which can be sung in a funny tone to add to the fun.
The illustrations and storyline complement each other superbly. My 7 year old enjoyed the book when I read it to him last year though I had to explain quite a bit about the calculations. I guess he will understand it better now. Apt for children aged 7/8 and above. The story does end up testing their ways with numbers with all the adding up and deductions at various steps. Captain coconut does go bananas literally before solving the mystery of the bananas which went missing quite mysteriously!
