“Chitty: A Dog and her Forest Farm” by Serow and illustrated by Rajiv Eipe. Published by Kalpavriksh. A moving account based on a true story about the adventures of a dog on a forest farm in the Western Ghats.
Chitty was born somewhere in the streets of Pune. She was found on the doorstep of the author’s friend Manisha on a stormy monsoon night. Manisha offered the author to take the puppy as a pet which she couldn’t refuse. Chitty then travelled by jeep from Pune to a forest farm in the western ghats of Karnataka. The farm was in the middle of a thick and moist deciduous forest. It had an orchard and a small vegetable garden. The nearest neighbour was on the other side of the forest and had to be reached by crossing the forest followed by some paddy fields across three bridges.
Chitty gently and silently settled into her new life which was so different from what she had seen earlier. She had her own routine and was contented with her life. She developed very specific preferences of her own like star gazing while living on the farm. She was very affectionate and caring about the author but self contained. She didn’t demand attention. A lifelong bond and friendship between the author and Chitty started forming. Read the beautiful story to get a glimpse into the life and adventures of Chitty.
My eight year old and me loved reading the book. We were moved by the story. The illustrations are stunning to say the least. They make the story and the setting come alive in front of our eyes. As usual, Rajiv Eipe has done a brilliant job! This book is a MUST READ for anyone who loves nature. It is a treat for all those who love dogs too! Chitty is bound to make a mark with her extraordinary mind and soul on anyone who reads the book.
