“Dancing With Birds” by Bulbul Sharma. Published by Talking Cub, the childen’s book imprint of Speaking Tiger. A beautifully illustrated poetry book showcasing the colourful and magical world of the birds.
The book introduces children to various birds through a catchy poem. The setting is a beautiful tree which is called as the toffee tree. The handsome lorikeet is busy munching a sweet fruit freely available on the tree. Everyone from a bee to an owl to an eagle seem to be having a problem with its grumbling.
There is the owl who can move his head in every direction. And a woodpecker hammering away at the tree with its rhythmic pecking. The quarrelsome crow and the fierce eagle who is an ace hunter. Sing and dance your way into the world of the birds with your own movements while reading the book.
My 8.5 year old enjoyed reading this book which is very different from what we have been reading lately. It was refreshing to be reading a light read on birds for the birdwatcher in me. My son was hooked to the poem and admired the illustrations. He was amused that the author shares her name with a beautiful species of birds. The sounds and movements of the birds are portrayed wonderfully in the book through the words while their beauty is showcased through the vibrant sketches. The book makes one long to watch the birds in action and join them in what seems to be their own delightful dance. Our only grouse was that the book ended too fast for our liking. We would have loved it if a few more birds had joined the dance :D
Recommended Age
The book is apt for children aged 6 and above.
Reasons to Read
The book is a good means to introduce children to both birds and poetry while making them want to dance with the birds.
