“Ganesha’s Sweet Tooth” by Sanjay Patel and Emily Haynes. Published by Tota books. A lovely take on a classic tale of how God Ganesha came to write the Mahabharata, the epic poem narrated by the wise sage Vyasa.
Ganesha is like any other normal kid except that he has the head of an Elephant and rides a magical mouse. He has a fondness for sweets especially the delicious Laddoos. When Ganesha insists on eating a jumbo Laddoo despite the warning of his best friend Mooshak that it is a jawbreaker, he ends up breaking his tusk. He is not invincible after all. Despite all his and Mooshak’s attempts, the tusk couldn’t be attached again.
Ganesha was very upset naturally. He took out all his anger and frustration by hurling the tusk at the moon. It hit an old man who was walking nearby instead of the moon. The man happened to be Sage Vyasa. What happened next? What did Vyasa do? How did Ganesha come to write Mahabharata? What did he use to write it? This is what the book is about.
I have been reading this lovely book with my seven year old for the last 3 years. It is one of his favourite books given that Ganesha is his favourite God. The graphic illustrations are quite charming and colourful. The book is apt for children aged 4+.
Where to buy from?
The publishers Tota Books here.
An independent indie bookstore, Funky Rainbow, from where I buy many of my books.
There was briefly a time when my (then) six year old recorded videos of books he liked. Here is a video done by him about this book at that time :)
