“Grandma Bubba’s Warm Shawl” by Rijuta Ghate. Published by Jyotsna Prakashan. A simple story of the generosity and unconditional love of a grandmother who loves to knit.
Grandma Bubba lived on a mountain and had lots of sheep. She kept herself busy with one thing or the other. She took great care of her sheep whom she loved dearly. When winter was approaching, she thought of knitting a nice and bright red coloured shawl for herself. She could tuck into it while sleeping. She sheared the wool off one of her sheep for making the shawl.
As she started knitting, her grandson came running excitedly towards her. He wanted a sweater for himself. Grandma Bubba changed her plans and started knitting the sweater for him instead of her shawl. His sweet little kiss and a tight hug were much warmer than a shawl for her.
What else did Grandma Bubba knit? Who all did she knit for? How did she get different colours for her wool? Did she finally make a shawl for herself? Read the delightful story to find out. The illustrations are charming and bring the characters to life. Grandma Bubba’s character is so bubbly and cheerful that one cannot help admiring her.
My 7.5 year old has loved reading this book from the time he was 6. He would look forward to how grandma Bubba made the colours to dye the wool. The book is a nice bedtime read. It is also one of those warm and cozy books to snuggle up to whenever one needs a bit of cheering up. Thank you Vidya Mani of Funky Rainbow for recommending this lovely book.
