“Gulgul in Jungalu” by Ashok Rajagopalan. Published by Speaking Tiger. An adventure story of a clever and naughty girl Gulgul who lives on planet GR33N with her parents.
Gulgul and her parents Jit and Megha are on their way home from a fun filled outing to the amusement park in planet H4H4H0. Thanks to the naughty little girl distracting her dad while cruising through space, their space car crashed into an unknown lake on a planet called Jungalu. They are forced to land and rescued by a strange elephant like creature.
Their hosts are kind and friendly. But how are they to know that getting home is not going to be so straightforward. How will they repair their space car or get a space cab? There is no network to contact someone from their planet for help. Megha wants to build her zingjuck which will shoot them back to space from where they can make a phone call for a space cab. Well, there are rules in Jungalu which do not allow anyone to chop trees for timber or mine for metals. With no wood and steel, Megha cannot build a zingjuck.
Will Mahali, the giant mouse and wise leader of Jungalu be able to help Gulgul and her family? How can a wild assortment of weird creatures come together to help them? Read the fun filled adventure that Gulgul and her parents have with the patches, flippots, longfellows, bluglugs and others in Jungalu.
My eight year old had a rollicking time reading the book with me. We just couldn’t stop chuckling at the word play and funny rhyming names of course. Ashok Rajagopalan has a way with words and sounds that has always impressed us. This series promises to be on the same scale as the famed Gajapati Kulapati series that we have loved for the last six years. Not to forget the charming illustrations. It will be hard not to like the super cute Gulgul! The book is a combination of multiple genres like science fiction, fantasy, humour and adventure mixed with brilliant word play which can be understood and appreciated by eight year olds too! All in all an amazing book. The book is the first one from the “The Adventures of Gulgul” series. There are six books now in the series. Thank you Vidya Mani of Funky Rainbow for recommending this lovely book!
