“Hey Diddle Diddle” by Anushka Ravishankar and illustrated by Priya Kuriyan. Published by Duckbill. A lighthearted story of little Minootty who is curious to know if a cow can actually jump over the moon the way in which it happens in the nursery rhyme.
One day, Minootty was in class and not paying much attention to what was being said by the teacher in Maths class. She could hear the younger children singing the popular rhyme “Hey Diddle Diddle” in the kindergarten class next to hers. The rhyme made her curious to know if a cow could actually jump over the moon. A horse at least might be able to jump.
Minootty tried voicing her doubt with her best friend Susan. But Susan turned away her face. She then remembered that Susan had stopped talking to her. A small misunderstanding had cropped up between them and got blown out of proportion. Minootty had always wanted a horse. But her parents had never agreed. She already had hens, ducks, two cats, one dog and a cow with her calf. Susan had gifted her a book about a girl who rode a horse and won many jumping competitions. Minootty couldn’t stop thinking about the book and the rhyme. How she wished her parents would agree to get a horse so that she could be like the girl in the book! Can a cow ever be able to jump like in the rhyme? How is Minootty going to find out? Will her wish of riding a horse in a running competition come true? Will she and Susan ever become friends again? Read the book laced with humour and innocence of the little girl to know what happened next.
My 8.5 year old loved reading the book with me. The humour in the story kept us giggling throughout :) The plot was so enjoyable. Illustrations are top notch making the story come alive in front of one’s eyes. The book is part of the “hook book” series by Duckbill and well suited for children who are beginning to read on their own. The fairly large sized text along with pictures are very helpful in making the gradual transition to chapter books with lesser pictures.
Recommended Age
The book is apt for children aged 5/6 and above.
