“How Do Aeroplanes Fly?” by Aditi Sarawagi and illustrated by Lavanya Karthik. Published by Pratham. A book about a little girl who aspires to be a pilot and all that she learns about flight and aeroplanes.
Sarla loved watching the birds fly in the sky. She loved to watch planes fly too! One day she was watching an eagle gliding in the sky during her science class in school. She was thinking how happy it must be feeling. Her new teacher saw her looking out of the window. She called her out and asked her why she wasn’t looking at the board. Sarla hastily apologised to the teacher and told her what she had been watching. She also expressed her desire to fly like a bird or an aeroplane.
Well, what did the teacher do? She appreciated what Sarla wished for. She told her that Sarla was the name of the first Indian woman pilot as well. Her name was Hamsa which means Swan. Swans are one of the largest flying birds. She advised Sarla to spend time on reading up about birds, planes and other machines which can fly.
Thanks to the teacher’s suggestion, Sarla spent time reading books about birds and aeroplanes in the next few days. What did she learn? Did she understand how planes could fly? Read the book to find out. There are some fun facts about Indian planes and pilots at the end of the book. Also some fun activities related to flying.
My seven year old had fun reading this book which we picked up from his school library. The topic is explained in simple words and in detail making it enjoyable. The book is level 3 and apt for children aged 6/7+.
