“Kindness With Mahavira” by Chitwan Mittal & Sarita Saraf and illustrated by Debasmita Dasgupta. Published by Adidev Press. A charming board book to introduce children to Mahavira and his teachings.
Mahavira was an Indian saint who preached about kindness. He looked deep within and realised that all creatures have an equal soul irrespective of their appearance or size. We need to be equally kind to all of them. His followers are very mindful of even the tiny insects and practice kindness in different ways in their daily activities.
What can we do in our daily lives to incorporate kindness? What is it that we can learn from Mahavira’s teachings? These we are some of the things that are written in simple text in verse format for children to read and think about. The illustrations are bright and charming.
My eight year old enjoyed reading the book with me. He was initially apprehensive as it was a board book. But the topic was new for him as he wasn’t aware of either Mahavira or Jain practices. So the book was an eye opener of sorts for him. He was intrigued to know how kindness is practiced by the community. He is now eager to know more about Mahavira. The book is part of “Learning TO BE” series which focuses on Indian saints and their teachings. Apart from this book, there are two other books in the series on the Buddha and Guru Nanak.
Recommended Age
The book is apt for children aged 4+.
