“Kozhukatta” by Sumi Chandrasekharan and illustrated by Zafouko Yamamoto. Published by Tota Books. A hilarious story of absent minded Ponnu’s tryst with the delicious Kozhukatta.
The story is an adaptation of a traditional Indian folk tale. Ponnu lived in a village in Kerala. His biggest problem was his extremely short memory. He could remember almost nothing which got him into trouble always. He would go to do a particular thing and end up doing something else! He would get very frustrated when he couldn’t remember the names of things that he liked to eat.
One day he decided to pay a visit to his friend Kunju. Thankfully he could remember the way to his house! He was treated to delicious savouries and hot coffee. He loved one of the dishes in particular. It was white and round in shape made using coconut, rice and spices. He had never eaten it before. He loved it so much and asked Kunju what it was. It was a Kozhukatta!
Ponnu decided to leave for home immediately. He didn’t want to forget the name. He had to tell it to his wife Janaki and ask her to make it. What happened next? Was he able to remember the name? Did he forget it along the way? Would Janaki get to know the right name? Read the book while munching on a plate of savouries :)
My seven year old has loved the book from the time he was six. The story makes him chuckle and drool looking at the pictures of all those sweets and snacks! A perfect book for little foodies :) The book is apt for children aged 4+.
