“Let’s Make Some Lime Juice” by Nandini Bajpai and illustrated by Niloufer Wadia. Published by Pratham. A book that charmingly introduces the concept of fractions using a simple but yummy recipe.
The story is narrated by a little girl. She always plays with seven of her friends after school under the peepal tree. Raju uncle’s tea shop is nearby. Whenever it is very hot, he keeps a jug of lime juice and some glasses for the children. The first challenge that they face is to divide the juice equally amongst themselves. How do they go about this? Will their idea work? Will they need Raju uncle’s help at all?
They want to have some more lemon juice after drinking what was already in the jug. This time Raju uncle just tells them to look up the recipe that he has put up on a board and asks them to make it. He gives them all the ingredients. The proportions are given on the board. They don’t know how to measure things out of ten. What do they do? How can they prepare the juice? Will they be able to make it? Read the delightful book to know.
My 7.5 year old loved the book when we read it recently. He could relate very well to the story as he just been introduced to fractions in school. The book served as a good means to reinforce the concept with simple and practical examples. We had tried reading this when he was six. He hadn’t understood the concept fully then and therefore not appreciated the book as much.
Recommended Age
The book is level 2 and apt for children who have just learnt or are about to learn fractions. That puts it around 6/7+.
