List : Teachers Day Special
Today (September 5) is observed as Teacher’s Day in India in honour of the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. He was the first Vice President and second President of independent India. Before that, he was a teacher for many years. Here are some books from our collection featuring both real and fictional teachers who make a difference to the lives of those around them in each of these stories.
Delhi Thaatha - A Great Grand Story
A grand story indeed of an even grander personality. Well the Thaatha (which means grandfather) being referred to in this book is none other than the much loved Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. The book is written by his great granddaughter from the perspective of her seven year old self.
An endearing story of eight year old Joshua who yearns to learn to play a musical instrument. However his dad had said no when he asked about it as they could not afford to get one. One day Joshua hears the notes of a guitar and ends up following a music teacher from house to house observing him play the guitar. When the teacher comes to know of Joshua’s dream, he takes it upon himself to make a change in Joshua’s life by convincing his father to allow him to learn music.
The Miracle on Sunderbaag Street
A beautiful story inspired by true events. Young Zara sits alone in a dump yard on Sunderbaag street every evening despite her Papa’s advice to stay away from there. She is grieving for her mother and trying to avoid people. Miss Gappi who was her old craft teacher starts coming there daily and plants an idea of restoring the dump yard to the beautiful park that it used to be. The lives of Zara as well as people who live on Sunderbaag Street are changed forever by this mission.
A delightful story showcasing the forgotten and delightful art of letter writing. Krisha is a little girl who studies in class 3. She is in hospital and recovering from appendicitis. Miss Zarina, her teacher, comes up with a novel idea to cheer her up and make her feel better. She decides to write a letter to Krisha and make all the other children in the class write as well. They can all update Krisha as to what they have been doing in class during her absence and how much they are missing her.
Little Jagadish and the Great Experiment
A charming book encouraging children to follow their curiosity with experiments and trying to find answers to questions through clues and observations. Inspired by the life and extraordinary works of Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose, the story features a teacher who nurtures and encourages little Jagadish to find answers to his questions.
The Girl Who Loved to Run : P.T.Usha
A charming short biography of the childhood of the legendary athlete. The story features her sports teacher Bala Sir who spotted her talent even before she knew it and nurtured it to transform her into an athlete.
A riveting book about the age fraud, rampant corruption and other challenges that are affecting Indian Football. The book makes it to this list just because of Siraj, the head coach, who leads a fight against the corrupt system for the sake of his students.
A delightful story of feisty little Dhara who starts a revolutionary practice in her school and learns quite a bit of things herself. All this thanks to her favourite teacher Chandra Ma’am who plants the seeds of change in the minds of the children encouraging them to think of what changes they would like to make around them in school.
