“Little Koel Finds His Song - Learn About Birds” illustrated by Kunal Kundu. Published by Scholastic and part of the “Scholastic Early Science” series. A delightful book that introduces children to various kinds of birds and the sounds that they make.
Little Koel came out of the egg that had been left in the Crow’s nest. He tried to caw like the other hatchlings who were the crow’s own. When he couldn’t, the mother crow told him not to worry as he was a Koel unlike them. Koels sang instead of cawing. He needed to learn to sing now. So he sets off on a quest to do that.
The Koel goes around asking all the birds that he meets on his way if they could teach him. They all try. But can they teach him? Will he accept their sound as a song? How does he learn? Will he able to sing? Who can teach him? The little ones will find it a delight to meet several common birds who try teaching the Koel. Fun facts about these birds are also mentioned in the last page of the book.
My almost eight year old has been reading this book for the last three years. Few years ago, as we were browsing the books to buy online, he saw an advertisement for this book and wanted us to order it right away. He told us excitedly that this was the book based on which they were performing a play in his school for annual day. He was playing the role of the owl! The 4-5 year old children in his class did a wonderful play based on this book. They dressed up as birds and played their roles to perfection imitating the birds and delivering their dialogues. The book is apt for children aged 4+.
