“Mangoes and Mischief” by Sreedevi Gopakumar and illustrated by Sahitya Rani. Published by Ms Moochie. A charming story for all those who love mangoes.
Malu and Moidootty are friends. Their summer holidays have started. They spend time together playing marbles, flying kites and fishing in ponds. All the trees in their village are filled with fruits and flowers.
Moidootty loved mangoes more than anything else in the world. One day he sighed to Malu about his wish to eat a few mangoes. Malu immediately ran up to a mango tree to try and get some mangoes. She picked up a pebble from the ground, took her aim and threw it high up the tree with the hope of getting some mangoes.
But an extraordinary thing happened instead. There came a voice from the tree of someone shrieking in pain. The voice said, “Owww! Ayyooo! Who dares to throw stones at Maangasura?”. Malu and Moidootty find themselves in a tricky situation. They frantically looked around as to where the voice was coming from. There was a rustling among the leaves and ... Maangasura landed in front of them with a thud!
What happens next? Who is Maangasura? Is he benevolent or nasty? Do Malu and Moidootty get in to trouble due to their mischief? What do they learn from this incident? Find out much more about mangoes as well as mischief in this lovely story. Loved reading this out to my (then) six year old who loves Mangoes! Apt for 5+ year olds. Thank you Vidya Mani of Funky Rainbow for this lovely recommendation.
