“Mukesh Starts a Zoo” by Ruskin Bond and illustrated by Gouri Katdare. This is a Puffin chapter book by the master storyteller who just celebrated his 87th birthday yesterday (19th May).
Mukesh goes to the zoo with his parents when he visits Delhi. He is fascinated watching the animals and birds there. As the small town in which he lives does not have a zoo, he thinks of starting one with his friend Teju. Little does he know what he is getting into isn’t so easy as it seems.
They need star attractions to get the people to visit the zoo. With acquisitions like a house lizard (yes that’s right), a dog with yellow eyes (well that makes it qualified to be in the zoo), a parrot that chants prayers (borrowed from Teju’s grandmother without her knowledge) and the washerman’s donkey (well it can be passed off as a wild donkey and a cousin of the wild ass!!), how can they possibly fail!
On the opening day, however, there is complete chaos and pandemonium as visitors are checking out the zoo. What happens next? Will Mukesh be able to pursue his dream of becoming a star zookeeper? The charming illustrations complement the story well. An unforgettable tale from Bond’s treasure of stories. Perfect for children starting off with chapter books. My seven year old loved the story. Thank you Vidya Mani of Funky Rainbow for recommending this lovely book!
