“Shaljam” for Hindi Divas (September 14). Illustrated by Niharika Shenoy and published by Eklavya. A lovely folk tale about an enormous turnip.
An old man is trying to harvest the turnip in his field. It turns out to be a giant one. He finds it difficult to pull it out. What does he do next? Seek help of course. Who all come to his aid? Can they pull the turnip out? What will it take for the enormous turnip to come out of the soil?
A hilarious story this one. Enjoyed reading it with my seven year old. A play based on this story had been performed during the annual day by his friends when they were in kindergarten three years ago. So it was a wonderful recollection of the event for him. The charming illustrations were a treat for the eyes. This is one of the big books published by Eklavya for those beginning to read Hindi. The text is repetitive and in verse format making it easy for the readers. Thank you Vidya Mani of Funky Rainbow for recommending this one!
