“Shiva Loves to Dance” by Anita Raina Thapan and illustrated by Roma Singh. Published by Tota Books. A story about why dancers seek the blessings of God Shiva before they begin their performance and what happens when God Shiva dances.
Little Gittoo was very excited. It was the day of his sister Gauri’s dance performance. The stage was all set and everyone was waiting for the dance to begin. Gauri walked gracefully onto the stage and offered some flower petals to the beautiful statue of God Shiva kept on the side of the stage. Gittoo was curious to know why she did that. His mama assured him that she would explain later.
Gauri’s dance performance went very well. Gittoo felt proud of her and was awed by the grace she exuded in her dance. When he went to bed that night, he wanted to know more about God Shiva and his connection with dance. As promised earlier, his mama explained the story about how God Shiva created the world by his dance. Join Gittoo and his mama to know how God Shiva creates a new and happy world with his dance, how maintains grow taller, how rivers flow faster and how all creatures love the sound of Shiva’s jingling feet and the beat of his damaru.
My 7.5 year old has enjoyed reading this story for the last three years. He was curious to know about the connection between God Shiva and dance. The book is a perfect means to know more about God Shiva for children. The significance of the name Nataraja has been explained very well in a simple manner for children to understand.
