“Suni Goes to Space” by Arthy Muthanna Singh & Mamta Nainy and illustrated by Aniruddha Mukherjee. Published by Red Panda. The story of Sunita Williams who went to space a record seven times and realised her dream of reaching out for the moon and stars.
The story starts off when Suni is a little girl. She loved solving problems. Her curiosity led her to the most unusual solutions on several occasions. For the questions that her siblings/friends came up with, she would come up with the most interesting solutions. One day she wanted to find out why she couldn’t see the people whose voices she could hear over the radio. In order to do this, she planned to break it open!
Just as Suni was about to hit the radio with a hammer, it blared. A historic announcement was being made. A man called Neil Armstrong had set foot on the moon. How unusual and interesting for Suni to hear it! She changed her plans and started thinking about how to go to the moon. Did Neil Armstrong go on a hot air balloon or did he build a ladder long enough to reach the moon? Her excitement knew no bounds and she decided to become an astronaut. Read the book to know about her extraordinary journey.
My almost eight year old enjoyed reading the book with me. He had read about Sunita Williams in his EVS textbook and was interested in knowing more about her. Since he loves true stories, the book appealed even more. We had already read a book about Kalpana Chawla and he was glad to know that things went better for Sunita Williams than her. The book is part of the “Little Leaders” series by Red Panda.
