The Blue Horse And Other Amazing Animals From Indian History
by Nandini Sengupta and illustrated by Damini Gupta
“The Blue Horse And Other Amazing Animals From Indian History” by Nandini Sengupta and illustrated by Damini Gupta. Published by Hachette. An unusual collection of stories of animals who have made history in their own ways serving great kings, queens and warriors over the centuries.
History is not just made by humans. While great royals did rule their kingdoms with valour and courage and fought numerous battles, they were served by some of the most loyal and courageous animals who put their lives at risk more than often. Some of the most ruthless seeming rulers did have a soft corner for some of their pet animals and birds. It is high time that their stories be told through their own voices. After all they cannot be ignored, forgotten or added just as footnotes in history books like before.
These animals have been the strongest allies, trustworthy and loyal friends and even soulmates to some eminent historical personalities. From helping their humans win important battles to being a constant source of joy and love, they have done it all. There are nine stories in the book. While some of these animals might be heard of, most are not so well known. There are all kinds of creatures like cheetahs, horses, elephants, dogs and a parrot no less. The stories are full of their daring exploits, epic romances filled with heart wrenching moments. Read the book to enjoy these unusual and one of a kind stories which took place over the course of history.
My 8.5 year old and I loved reading the book. This book had been on our wish list for long and I got it when a sudden trip to Rajasthan was planned and we would be visiting Chetak’s memorial. The blue horse referred to in the title is the legendary Chetak who saved Maharana Pratap’s life in the famed battle of Haldighati against the Mughals. We ensured that we read his story before going to Haldighati and took the book along with us there.
Some of the stories that stood out for us other than Chetak’s were those of Chhatrapati Maharaj Shivaji’s dog Waghya, Rani Durgavati’s elephant Sarman and King Jayakesi’s parrot. My son was thrilled to read more about Alexander’s pets Bucephalus and Peritas as he had already heard their mention in the time travel based book called “Chandragupta Maurya and the Greek Onslaught”. The author has chosen such a different and wonderful topic and presented the stories so well!
