“The Bookworm” by Lavanya R.N. and illustrated by Shilo Shiv Suleman. Published by Karadi Tales. A story about little Sesha and his brown book which can transform him into a whole new person.
Sesha was a ten year old boy who was very silent. He was always buried in books. Every Thursday he would visit the library to pick a new book. Everyone thought that he was weird. They made fun of him by singing a song about him whenever he walked past them. They wondered how his face looked and whether he could talk at all?
Sesha wasn’t bothered about the taunts of the other children. He would get lost in his own world of books. He carried a little brown notebook with him always. When he wasn’t reading, one could find him writing in the notebook. Nobody had ever seen or read what was in it. They guessed that it might contain many secrets. There were a pair of bullies in his class. Everyone avoided them and stayed out of their way. One rainy day, they made Sesha fall and his brown notebook flew out of his hands to land in a muddy puddle!
What happened next? What did Sesha do? Could he speak after all? Did he have a problem? Did he confront the bullies? Did anyone come to his aid? Did this incident cause a change in Sesha’s life? Did other children change their opinion about him? Did the bullies realise that what they had done was not fair? Read the book to find out all of these. A story that talks about showing kindness, inclusiveness, bullying, confidence issues and the power of books of course!
My seven year old liked the book from the time we got it last year. The illustrations are gorgeous and lend life to the story. The way the bullies are handled so subtly yet sternly was something that we liked. The book is apt for children aged 6+.
