“The Magic Couch : Adventures With Thatha” by Shilpa Rao and illustrated by Sahitya Rani. Published by Talking Cub. An adorable story of the beautiful bonding between a little boy and his grandfather.
The story is narrated by a little boy. He is happy to be back home from school. After all it is the time he looks forward to. This is when he gets to spend time with his Thatha (grandfather) and play with him. Though Thatha looks old and cannot jump or run like him, there is an adventure seeker and a little boy inside him. Together they have a fabulous adventure each day. They are best friends and partners as he likes to say. He wishes that their playtime never comes to an end.
Their couch is the setting for each of their escapades. It can serve as a car or a plane or a jeep sometimes. They can go wherever they please by just imagining. From driving on the highway to gliding over the beautiful snow clad mountains of the Ladakh range to pretending to go to Mars to chugging through the sugarcane fields of Mandya in a tractor and so on. Whats to stop them! Sky isn’t the limit you see. Thatha is the wind beneath his wings which help him go anywhere and everywhere. They meet a variety of creatures along the way like leopards, turtles, clownfish and so on. Read the book to experience the magic of the couch or rather Thatha and embark on a journey.
My eight year old and I loved reading this book. It brought back quite a few beautiful memories for my son of his own time with my dad who is no more with us. Though he felt sad, he was eager to know what happened next as we flipped through the pages of the book. The book celebrates the beautiful bonding between a grandfather and grandson as well as the diverse landscapes of incredible India. Imagination and pretend play have immense benefits. The last few pages talk about each of the places that have been mentioned in the story. A wonderful way to introduce some information relevant to the regions. The text is simple and very catchy with the rhyming words. The vivid and charming illustrations lend their life to the story.
