“The Night Monster” by Sushree Mishra and illustrated by Sanket Pethkar. Published by Karadi Tales. A beautiful picture book addressing the fear of dark in little children.
Avi was a brave boy during daytime but very scared of the night. The night monster scared him every night when the owl hooted and the shadows of the trees danced on the walls of his room. He talked about his fears with his elder sister Swati. She came up with an idea to draw whatever scared him on a piece of paper and lock it up in a box. His fears would disappear forever. He tried drawing a picture of the night monster and locking it up. But the plan didn’t work. The monster was back again the next night. Now Avi tried writing a letter to the monster based on Swati’s suggestion and waiting for a reply. Thus began a daily ritual of writing a letter in the night and getting a reply the next morning.
What messages do Avi and the night monster exchange? Does Swati’s plan of letters work? What happens next? Will Avi get over his fears? Or will the night monster stop coming? This is what the story is about. The haunting illustrations in mixed media are mind blowing. A treat for the children to be able to read the postcard format letters in the form of pop ups. My seven year old read this last year and loved it. Apt for 5+ year olds. Thank you Vidya Mani of Funky Rainbow for recommending this book!
