“The Runaway Peacock” by Niyatee Sharma and illustrated by Shailja Jain Chougule. Published by Tulika. A charming story of little Trisha following a curious peacock who jumps off from her mother’s beautiful saree and decides to explore the world.
Trisha is a little girl who has come to the market with her mother. Her mother has worn a beautiful saree. Trisha was admiring her mother’s saree and counting the number of peacocks on it as they walked. Suddenly a movement caught her eye. It was a peacock! He wanted to see the world around. Off he jumped when he thought that no one was looking.
Trisha was caught by surprise. She had to follow the peacock and get him back. He had jumped on to a colourful umbrella. Where did he go next? Will Trisha be able to follow him? Can she get him back? Will she get separated from her mother? Will her mother realise what has happened? Join Trisha on her chase and experience the sights of the market and its surroundings. The illustrations are bright and lovely enhancing the experience of the chase.
My 7.5 year old has loved this book for almost two years now. We had lot of fun spotting the peacock in the illustrations each time he went somewhere. Thank you Vidya Mani of Funky Rainbow for recommending this lovely book!

Reasons to Read
Every child has vivid and wild imagination. They build worlds of their own in them. We grown ups call them make believe, but for the children they are very real adventures. This book is one such wild ride taking the form of a chase like in a hide-and-seek game.
