“The Sky Queen” by Mamang Dai and illustrated by Srivi. Published by Katha. An enchanting folk tale from Arunachal Pradesh about the glorious celestial aunt Nyanyi Myete who is celebrated by the Adi tribe.
The book is divided into two chapters. The first one starts off with the story of the Kojum Koja civilisation which existed at the dawn of life. The people were very happy and content. They lived peacefully. But their joy wouldn’t last forever. They defied the advice of their elders which led to their downfall. What was it that they did? What happened to them? Did they learn from their mistakes? Did they get a chance at all?
The second one introduces Nyanyi Mete, a beautiful lady of the Kojum civilisation, who came gliding from the skies one day. She was loved by all the villagers and soon became the centre of attraction. She was very kind to one and all. Her beauty and qualities were unmatched. She ensured that all people were happy. She told them tales about her people.
She never let people forget her connection with the land of Kojum-Koja which had been buried during the big flood. She told them stories about their culture, festivals, songs and dances. The Adis of Arunachal Pradesh celebrate the festival of Unying Aran every year during which they celebrate Nyanyi Myete. Read the book to know about the Kojum Koja and Nyanyi Myete.
I enjoyed reading this book with my eight year old. This was our fourth book from Arunachal and the second one by the same author (first one being “Hambreelmai’s Loom”). The book gives a beautiful glimpse of the folklore of Arunachal. The connection between the people and nature is something that we get to see in folktales such as these.
Recommended Age
