“The Tiger Eaters” by Samina Anim and illustrated by Ambika Sambasivan. Published by Karadi Tales. A story of how smartness is more powerful than physical strength.
Cheekra and Shankra were a fox couple. They were returning from a long and tiring hunting trip with their three cubs. It was pretty late and darkness had fallen over the forest. They realised that they were lost and the cubs were too tired to walk any more. Cheekra spotted a cave nearby and wondered if they would be able to spend the night there before resuming their journey the next morning.
As soon as they entered the cave, they saw something that made them gasp. It was a Tiger’s lair. His large paw-prints could be seen there. It was too dangerous for them to be there. What if the tiger came back now? They would become his meal in all probability. Where else could they go now? The children were already half asleep. They had to plan something very quickly. Cheekra did have an idea.
Would Cheekra be able to protect them? Was the tiger going to come back? What could they do to outwit a tiger after all? Were they a match at all for the fierce tiger? Would they survive the night in the cave? Read the delightful story to find out.
My eight year old has enjoyed reading this book for the last three years. He found the story quite gripping and wanted to know what happened next. He realised the importance of quick thinking and how it is useful.
