“The Very Wiggly Tooth” by Reshma Thapa-Gurung and illustrated by Canato Jimo. Published by Pratham. A charming story of little Bunu’s tooth trouble and how she loses it finally with a little help from a Himalayan tradition.
Little Bunu is having a wiggly tooth. This is her first loose tooth. She is very excited about it! But a bit apprehensive and scared as well. She keeps trying to make it fall to no avail. She approaches her parents for help. They both tell her to wait patiently. The tooth isn’t ready. It will fall on its own and Bunu needn’t worry.
Well, how can Bunu stop thinking about the tooth. She tries all ideas like tying one end of a string to the tooth and the other end to the door knob. None of her plans work to her dismay! What can she do now? How long will she have to wait? Can a Himalayan tradition help her? Read the story to find out.
I bought this for my seven year old when he was six. He had just begun losing his teeth then and was happy to read a story on the topic. He couldn’t stop chuckling as we read the book. He could understand Bunu’s situation very well and was excited to know the ending. The author is a teacher in Sikkim and the story is probably based there. The illustrations add to the charm of the story. The book is apt for children aged 5+.
