“Travelling Seeds” by Lavanya Karthik. Published by Kalpavriksh. A book which explores the different fascinating ways in which the seeds undertake journeys and the animals which help them on these journeys.
The journey of seeds is very fascinating. While we plant some seeds in gardens, there are some seeds which travel in different ways to grow and thrive in new places. After all they need to spread everywhere to get enough sunlight, water and nutritious soil to grow.
Seeds can be categorised into different types based on the way they undertake their journeys. Fliers, hitchhikers, floaters, tricksters and some more! Interesting, isn’t it? :) Some of the seeds get gobbled up by animals and birds. Yet they manage to survive and pop out through the poop of these creatures to grow somewhere else. They play such an important role in the quest to keep their species alive and thriving. Explore the different modes of travel of seeds and meet the animals who help them in most of these journeys through the book. The charming illustrations enhance the experience.
My 7.5 year old has enjoyed reading the book from the time we bought it last year. He was amused to know about the travelling nature of seeds. He had seen flier seeds earlier and wondered why they were so light and flew everywhere. Overall a must read for all the curious ones. Thank you Vidya Mani of Funky Rainbow for recommending this gem of a book!
