“Treasures From Tibet” by Malavika Navale. Published by Katha. A story about the bonding between a little girl and her grandmother over what they consider as treasures and what makes them feel that they belong to a place.
Little Pema loved collecting stuff from their backyard and putting them in her treasure box. Simple things like wings of a butterfly, fallen leaves, buttons and feathers to name a few. She found a stone one day while playing and rushed excitedly to add it to her collection. She saw her momo-ley (grandmother in Tibetan) looking at something. It was her treasure box. Momo-ley invited Pema to have a look into what she kept in her treasure box. What an irresistible offer!

What are the treasures that momo-ley has collected? How does it remind her of her home and homeland? Are her treasures similar to what Pema collects? Will Pema appreciate and cherish her momo-ley’s treasures? Read the story filled with warmth and bonding between the two of them to know what it means to belong to a place and make it their home.
My 7.5 year old has been reading this book for almost two years now. He was moved by this story and has read more books on this topic such as “The Snow King’s Daughter” and “Portraits of Exile Series”. It is heartening to see how the Tibetans cherish memories of their homeland and hope to go back some day. At the same time, they have accepted India as their home now while retaining their culture and customs.
Recommended Age
