“Vatsala Loves Snakes” by Arthy Muthanna Singh and Mamta Nainy & illustrated by Divya George. Published by Karadi Tales in association with WWF. A charming story to create awareness about snakes and herpetology in children.
Vatsala has loved snakes ever since she saw a baby bronzeback in her garden. But her mother and friends found snakes quite creepy. They couldn’t understand why Vatsala was so fascinated by these reptiles. She however didn’t get affected by any of their comments about it. She wished she could show her friend Neeraj why she found snakes so interesting. She spent hours reading up on snakes and learning about them.
When a school trip to Sanjay Gandhi National Park was announced, Vatsala was ecstatic. She knew that quite a few fascinating species of snakes could be found there. Could the trip be the means to convince Neeraj that snakes aren’t so creepy after all? Does Vatsala get to see the snakes? Does she get to learn more about snakes on the trip? Does she manage to make her mother understand her fascination for snakes? Read the book to find out the answers to all of these.
My seven year old enjoyed reading the book. He was fascinated to learn new facts about snakes that we weren’t aware about earlier. The facts have been interspersed in the story beautifully. The illustrations make us go on a virtual trip to the National park and portray the landscape so well. It is heartwarming to see such lovely books on topics like these showcasing various branches of studies of fauna. Herpetology in this case. Recent books like this one which we have enjoyed include “Our Tigers Return”, “Sita’s Chitwan” and “Waiting For Turtles”.
