“What a Song!” - A folk tale from Bundelkhand illustrated by Jitendra Thakur and published by Eklavya. A simple and witty story of a village woman who never sings. All the other women in the village sang songs while going about their daily work. The woman also wanted to sing but she just didn’t know any songs! This made her feel left out and upset.
One day she asked her neighbour about where she learnt so many songs. The neighbour teased the woman saying that it was easy enough to get songs. They were sold in the market and she often bought them. She asked the woman to go and get some for herself as well. The woman told her husband to buy some songs from the market for her. The man seemed flustered as he had never come across songs being sold in the market. But he agreed to try and get some for his wife.
When the man arrived at the market, the shopkeepers had fun at his cost by making him roam around from shop to shop. All in vain. He couldn’t even buy one song. At last he started for home sadly. On the way he makes up a song by himself. And his wife is delighted to learn the song. She starts practising singing it right away. What happens next? Will the woman be able to learn the song? Will learning the song be helpful? The story needs to be read to know all of this. I had a whale of a time reading this story with my (then) six year old. It was fun to sing along as well. Thank you Vidya Mani of Funky Rainbow for this rocking recommendation. The story is apt for 5+ year olds.
