“When I Grow Up I Want to be a Tiger” by Prerna Singh Bindra and illustrated by Maya Ramaswamy. Published by Speaking Tiger. A story narrated by a tiger cub about his life in a forest in India and his animal friends as well as foes.
T-Cub, a six month old Tiger Cub, as he calls himself lives in a forest called Baghvan. He talks about how he has a wonderful time in the forest playing with his siblings and mother. He describes the various birds and animals that are found in the forest.
His mother is teaching them how to hunt. It is so exciting for them. His love and adoration for his mother has been shown so well. The lessons that she has taught them to take care of themselves by being careful not to go near bigger animals and humans. Though they are stronger than humans, they should be wary of them as men had powerful weapons like guns which could prove fatal for them. It is not easy to be a tiger with dangers lurking everywhere.
T-Cub wants to be safe and brave at the same time as he wants to grow into a Tiger. He is scared too. A sensitive topic has been portrayed beautifully through the eyes of the Tiger himself. The book ends with facts about Tigers and what can be done to protect them. The author has shared a comprehensive list of her favourite books on tigers and wildlife in general that can be read by children. The illustrations are beautiful and make the forest come alive as we read the book.
My seven year old had asked me to get him a book on Tigers after reading “Our Tigers Return” recently. I found this book while browsing the books in his school library and had to get it for him. He loved this one too. The book is apt for children aged 7/8+.
