“Why do they say wolves are bad?” by Quentin Gréban. Published by Jyotsna Prakashan. A story spun around the villainous wolf of the popular fairy tales such as Red Riding Hood and Three Little Pigs.
Has the wolf always been bad? Does he really want to eat everyone he comes across? Do we really know how he came to be known as the big bad wolf? The story starts off at a time when the wolf was quite ordinary. Not yet the big bad wolf. He lived a normal life with his little ones like all other animals.
One day he met a small lamb who had strayed from his herd. He saluted the lamb with a courteous smile. A big one which showed all his shiny white teeth. How would the poor wolf know that this would set things in motion! That his reputation would change from that moment. The lamb got so scared that he ran away to the pigs who were his friends for refuge. And he narrated his adventures to them. Well, lambs do exaggerate a bit isn’t it ;) In this case quite a bit!
The lamb told the pigs that the bad wolf attacked him and wanted to bite him with his pointy teeth. What did the pigs do next? The rumour has to spread. And each time it spreads, there has to be some exaggeration. Do read the book for a good laugh! Of course at the expense of the poor wolf who became the big bad wolf without his knowledge :(
Loved reading this with my seven year old. He has liked red riding hood and three little pigs since he was a toddler. So he knew the background to this well. Thank you Vidya Mani of Funky Rainbow for recommending this lovely book! Helped to get a fresh perspective on the erstwhile fairy tales. Also tells us why we cannot believe everything that we hear for there is a big probability of it being an exaggeration sometimes. Also why we shouldn’t spread news by exaggerating as it can cause harm to someone’s reputation or affect their life adversely. Apt for children aged 5+.
