“Howzzat Butterfingers!” by Khyrunissa A. and illustrated by Debanjan Nandy. Published by Penguin. An entertaining tale of the misadventures and scrapes of Butterfingers and his friends during the cricket matches of the inter school Nadkarni Tournament.
When Amar Kishen popularly known as Butterfingers or Butter in short is around, anything can happen. No one and nothing is safe. After all he has an uncanny knack of causing disasters. At the start of a new term in school, the under 15 cricket team of Green Park school is formed for the Nadkarni tournament. Butter finds himself as the vice captain of the team and is determined to win the trophy. Disasters seem to be following the team and school right from the start. The star all rounder ends up fracturing his arm. The first match is with a team which has not one but three girls to their shock. A girl joins not just their school despite it being a boys only school but Amar’s class itself.
To top it all Colonel Nadkarni suddenly passes away and the school is in danger of losing its playground which he was supposed to have left to them in his will of which there is no sign now. As per the existing will with the lawyer, the ground now belongs to the colonel’s nephew who is a builder. It is up to the school to find the will if at all it exists and retain their favourite ground. Amar and his friends are constantly on their toes facing all these problems. Can Amar and his team win the trophy for their school? Will they be able to save the grounds? Or will it slip away from their hands like a Butterfingers catch? Read the riveting book to go on a thrilling ride with Butterfingers and his friends as they play their matches.
Reading the book was a source of joy and fun for me and my 9.5 year old son. He loves the character of Butterfingers as well as the author’s writing style. He got introduced to Butterfingers in the latest book on him called “The World of Butterfingers” a couple of months back. Ever since that, he had been wanting to read more books from the series on Butterfingers. He was glad to have read this one. What made it even more interesting for him was that the theme was cricket here and the cricket buff in him was overjoyed to savour all the match moments. He connected some of the happenings in matches to real match moments that he knows of. He went on to demonstrate some of those scenes to me so that I could visualise them better :) The antics of Butterfingers both on and off the field made him giggle through the plot which was thick with action and suspense till the end. After all nothing is predictable when Butterfingers is around and he did live up to his reputation :) Stories like these set in schools are timeless and never fail to cheer us up. We now look forward to reading the other books from the series sooner than later.
