“You’ve Got This, Arjuna!” by Lissa Coffey and illustrated by Rajesh Nagulakonda. Published by AdiDev Press. A contemporary retelling of the Bhagavad Gita in a picture book format for younger children.
To explain the teachings of Bhagavad Gita to early readers, the author has done the retelling with Krishna and Arjuna as two little boys. Instead of a battle, the setting is the eve of a big football match for Arjuna. He is very confused as to how to go about the match. In fact, he wonders if he should even play it or not.
After all, his opponents are his cousins who are mean and headstrong. They do not care for rules and always choose to do the wrong things. He opens up his heart to his dear friend Krishna so that he can advise him. The resulting conversation is such an eye opening one for him. Krishna not only helps him take a decision, but also makes him realise what the game or life itself is all about in reality. Read the delightful book to soak up the essence of this eternal epic.
The wonderful lessons of the Gita have been explained so well in such simple and relatable situations for younger children. My almost ten year old and I had a great time reading the book and reminding ourselves of the lessons of the Gita. We liked the way the book has been adapted for early readers by making the protagonists as children and using contemporary situations that most children face at some point or the other. The learnings have been explained in a fun and engaging manner. The vibrant illustrations add a lovely touch to the gripping narrative. The retelling shows us all as to how we can imbibe the learnings of the Gita in our daily lives.
P.S - Another retelling of the Bhagavad Gita which we had read before is “Bhagavad Gita For Kids”.
Recommended Age
The story is apt for children aged 6 and above.
