“Nani’s Walk To The Park” by Deepa Balsavar. Published by Pratham. A super special story of little Venki and his grandmother who make an adventure out of a walk!
Venki’s nani (maternal grandmother) likes to go to the park once a week. He decides to accompany her on one such day. She tells him that she walks slowly and takes time getting there. He still insists on going with her. Little does he know what an experience it is going to be. A memory to cherish and something to look forward to doing again with her.

Nani picks up her shopping bag and starts walking. Venki tells her that the park is on the other side of the road. She has her own route planned. She has given her own names to some of the quaint lanes in the neighbourhood and has to pick up stuff as she goes around to the park. Venki tries to take a shortcut but nani has her reasons for going round the long route. Read the story to go on this amazing walk and savour the sights of this beautiful neighbourhood. Deepa Balsavar excels at creating such beautiful illustrations to accompany the lovely story that it is a heavenly match. This book has been printed in large format for children to savour the detailed illustrations. Every reading will make one go through the details and see something new!
My 7.5 year old has loved reading this book for the last 2-3 years. He had read this book lent by my cousin and liked it so much that he made sure I bought it for him. It is now a treasured addition to our collection of books. We loved the names given by nani to the lanes such as the lane of treasures, lane of beauty, lane of happiness and so on. Also loved the reference to the quilt using a word called goddhi (pronounced as go-the-dee) which is what we call it too in Konkani, our mother tongue :) The best part of the physical book versus the online version is the fold out poster at the end of the book which shows a bird’s eye view of the entire route that Venki and nani took to the park. One cannot get enough of watching it over and over again to see it in new light each time! This is a MUST READ for everyone. Another book by the same author that we loved is “The Sea in a Bucket”.
Recommended Age
The book is level 3 and apt for children aged 6+.
