“Gulgul in Sea-saw Gara” by Ashok Rajagopalan. Published by Talking Cub, the children’s imprint of Speaking Tiger. A hilarious story of Gulgul’s adventures in the giant water park like planet of C-54G4R4.
It is vacation time for Gulgul and she is excited to be going on a holiday with her parents Jit and Megha. Their destination this time is the planet C-54G4R4 which is like a giant water park. Gulgul likes to call it Sea-saw Gara :) She has a whale of a time in the water slides to start off the holiday with a splash! The next day is even more exciting. They have planned to go on a submarine safari and Gulgul is eager to see the creatures of the sea from close quarters. The submarine that is waiting to pick up passengers is on its first ride. Gulgul’s father Jit is skeptical about being the first people to take a ride on that submarine. However, Gulgul convinces him and goes aboard with another family of four having two twins Dev and Anand.
The ride starts off well. But then something unexpected happens. They get lost. The map app stops working as there is no connectivity and the routes where they have reached are unmapped! They are rescued by Giant octopuses who take them to their city on an island which is strangely called Turtlepura. Here everyone lives in aquariums . They eat sea-fruits, sea-vegetables and sea-nuts and drink sea-water! How will Gulgul and the others survive here? Will they be able to go back? Can the friendly octopuses help them get back to the water park where they started? Will they have more adventures along the way? What interesting creatures do they get to see? Read the lovely book and go on an underwater adventure with Gulgul and the other passengers in the submarine.
My almost nine year old and I had a rollicking time going on this ride of a story with Gulgul. After all there is fun and adventure wherever Gulgul goes. She does have an uncanny ability to attract adventures or rather misadventures! The book is the second one from the “The Adventures of Gulgul” series. There are six books altogether in the series and we have read and enjoyed the rest of them (“Gulgul in Jungalu”, “Gulgul in Para Para”, “Gulgul in Up-up-purra”, “Gulgul in Saregamma” and “Gulgul in Papadom”) already. The creative imagination, word play and illustrations in this book were brilliant as usual like the other books of the series. Gulgul’s charm is irresistible and sure to rub off even on a reluctant reader. Her happy go lucky nature is just infectious :)
